Sansterdam Maze: A Bold Display Font with Character

There’s a moment in every branding project when you’re staring at a blank brand board, trying to decide which font will make your client’s identity pop. That’s when I reached for Sansterdam Maze. It wasn’t just any font—it was the kind of typeface that made me pause, think, and then say, “This could work.”

A Typeface with Personality

Sansterdam Maze is a bold and incredibly cool display font with a unique feel. It doesn’t just look good; it feels like it belongs in a design that’s meant to stand out. The letterforms are confident, with sharp angles and a modern edge that suggests energy and creativity. It’s not your typical sans serif—it has a distinct character that makes it memorable.

The font carries a sense of urgency and dynamism, perfect for projects that need to grab attention immediately. Its weight and structure give it a strong visual presence, making it ideal for logos, headlines, and other high-impact design elements. I found myself using it repeatedly on a boutique identity project, where it helped define the brand’s vibe without overpowering the rest of the design.

Testing in Real Branding Projects

I tested Sansterdam Maze across several branding assets, from logo drafts to social media layouts. On a café visual refresh, it worked beautifully as the primary typeface for the logo and menu headers. The boldness of the font gave the brand a contemporary and approachable feel, while still maintaining a level of sophistication.

On a skincare product brand, I used it for the hero section of the website and packaging labels. The font’s clarity and strength made it easy to read even at smaller sizes, which is a rare quality for a display font. However, I noticed that in long body text or fine print, it can become overwhelming. That said, it’s not meant for those situations—it’s more of a headline or accent font.

When applied to a handmade shop branding project, Sansterdam Maze brought a sense of craft and individuality. It worked well on business cards and social media graphics, where its visual impact was most effective. But I also found that pairing it with a clean sans serif or a subtle serif font helped balance its intensity and created a more cohesive look.

Font Pairing and Design Flexibility

Sansterdam Maze is best used as a display font, headline font, or accent font. It pairs well with a variety of other typefaces depending on the desired aesthetic. For a more modern and minimal look, I paired it with a sleek sans serif like Montserrat. For a more elegant feel, a classic serif like Garamond or Cinzel worked nicely.

It also holds up well in editorial design, especially when used for titles or subheadings. In web design, it’s great for headers and call-to-action buttons. I even used it on an Instagram post as part of a creative studio identity, where it added a touch of personality without overshadowing the content.

One thing to note is that Sansterdam Maze isn’t always the best choice for formal corporate settings. Its bold and edgy style might not align with the expectations of a traditional business. It’s more suited for creative studios, lifestyle brands, and businesses that want to make a statement.

Considerations and Best Practices

Before using Sansterdam Maze in final client work, I recommend testing it in different contexts. How does it look on a shop sign? Does it maintain its impact at small sizes? Is it readable in color contrast? These are all important questions to ask yourself before committing to the font.

Also, be sure to review the included styles, alternates, ligatures, swashes, weights, and multilingual support if relevant. Sansterdam Maze offers a range of options that can help customize its use in various design scenarios. And don’t forget to check the commercial font licensing—especially if you’re using it in print-on-demand products, websites, or digital templates.

Finally, remember that while Sansterdam Maze is a premium font with a strong personality, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. It shines brightest when used intentionally and with purpose. When used correctly, it can turn any design project into a standout.
